20 Things You Didn’t Know About For Your Eyes Only (1981)

1. Bond-Like, But Not Roger Moore Bond-Like

Roger Moore was very uncomfortable with the scene in which Double-0 Seven kicks Emile Leopold Locque’s Mercedes Benz 450 SEL over the edge of a cliff. He claimed that, whilst it was very befitting of Ian Fleming’s James Bond and of Sean Connery’s, it did not fit his own style.

Efforts had been made since Roger Moore became James Bond to try and tailor his Double-0 Seven to his own personality, but this was a key moment in restoring a Fleming-sense of grittiness to the character of Bond after Moonraker.

One suggestion to protect Moore's lighter-hearted image was that Bond could throw the dove stickpin that is Locque's calling card into the Mercedes, causing it to topple over the edge of the cliff, but it was considered too unbelievable that the pin would significantly alter the balance of the car.

Ultimately, everyone - including Roger Moore - agreed to film the scene as written. It is still considered to be one of Double-0 Seven’s most cold-blooded moments.

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
