20 Things You Didn’t Know About GoldenEye (1995)

8. Drafting The Director In

Goldeneye Pierce Brosnan
MGM/UA

Producer, Barbara Broccoli firmly credited the success of the reinvented James Bond to director, Martin Campbell, as did Pierce Brosnan, who described him as a “powerhouse”.

Campbell even had a rare director’s cameo in a Bond film, featuring as the lead cyclist in the scene in which James Bond’s Aston Martin DB5 and Xenia Onatopp’s Ferrari 355 tear past a peloton of cyclists, causing them to tumble over as they heckle the two daring motorists.

The tongue-in-cheek scene was perfectly in-keeping with the New Zealand-born director’s health-conscious views. Campbell strongly disliked smoking and insisted that, unlike his predecessors, Pierce Brosnan’s Bond would not succumb to the temptation of nicotine.

Contributor

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
