20 Things You Didn’t Know About GoldenEye (1995)

7. “You Have A Licence To Kill, Not To Break The Traffic Laws!”

When Q (Desmond Llewelyn) introduces James Bond to the BMW Z3 Roadster in his workshop, he explains that it is equipped with "all the usual refinements" but, in the film, only two features are actually seen: the parachute breaking system and the vehicle’s all points radar display.

This was because the product placement deal between Eon Productions and BMW came very late in the film’s production and the German car manufacturer would only provide the Bond team with a prototype that could not be damaged in any way, meaning that it could not be used in any action scenes.

Nevertheless, the use of the Z3 in the film has been cited as one of the most successful product placement deals to feature in a movie; BMW produced a special “007 Model” of the car which sold out on the same day that it was made available to buy.

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
