20 Things You Didn’t Know About GoldenEye (1995)

6. “Revenge Is A Kiss, This Time I Won’t Miss!”

Goldeneye is Ian Fleming’s estate overlooking Oracabessa Bay on the northern shore of Jamaica where he wrote all of his James Bond novels and short stories from 1952 to 1964.

It was named after a British intelligence contingency plan that Fleming drew up in the event of an alliance between Francisco Franco’s Spain and the Axis powers during the Second World War. The estate is now a luxury hotel and tourist resort, comprising a series of tropical buildings with gardens and private beaches, as much a social hotspot now as it was when the author was alive.

Bono was staying at Goldeneye when he wrote the song for the film of the same name. He later fleshed it out with his fellow U2 band member, The Edge in the south of France and, as Tina Turner lived down the road from them, they played the song on her piano, which lured her into collaborating on it for the finished version.

Although GoldenEye is a classic James Bond theme, unfortunately, it did not chart in the US, but fittingly reached the number seven spot in the UK charts.

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
