20 Things You Didn’t Know About GoldenEye (1995)

1. “I Think I’ve Gone To Heaven.”

GoldenEye opens on an undeniable high note when Double-0 Seven bungee jumps off of a dam in Arkhangelsk in the Soviet Union to gain access to a chemical weapons factory undetected.

In reality, the sequence was shot at the Contra Dam (also known as the Verzasca Dam and the Locarno Dam) in the canton of Ticino, Switzerland. British stuntman, Wayne Michaels doubled for Pierce Brosnan when making the 220 metre jump off of the towering structure.

Practically as soon as the film was released, the dam was leased to a company that helped daredevil fans to replicate the ambitious stunt - a practice that continues to this day. Moreover, a Sky Movies poll held in 2002 that the opening bungee jump in GoldenEye was the best movie stunt of all time.

However, Michaels’s involvement in GoldenEye did not end there; a veteran of several Bond films, he returned as the dark-haired French pilot that Xenia Onatopp shoots onboard La Fayette so that she can steal the Tiger helicopter.

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
