20 Things You Didn’t Know About Live And Let Die (1973)

11. No More Hats

Live and Let Die Bond Solitaire

Up until this point in the James Bond films, Double-0 Seven had always walked onscreen wearing a smart hat during the famous opening gun barrel sequence.

However, in a further effort to distinguish Roger Moore from Sean Connery, the hat was discarded for this entry, along with Bond’s Walther PPK, his tuxedo, and his Vodka Martini. Although the other elements were gradually reintroduced into the Bond series as audiences grew more comfortable with Moore as the new Bond, the hat never returned, no doubt due to changing fashion styles.

Nevertheless, Moore’s Double-0 Seven would continue to toss his hat onto a rack in Miss Moneypenny's (Lois Maxwell's) office in future entries before that tradition was also extinguished with his departure from the franchise.

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
