20 Things You Didn’t Know About On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969)

Peter Hunt had intended to direct the next Bond film if George Lazenby returned as Double-0 Seven.
James and Tracy Bond would have driven off together in the Aston Martin DBS on their honyemoon at the end of OHMSS, before Tracy’s shocking death in the pre-credits sequence of Diamonds Are Forever. However, Lazenby’s resignation from the role of James Bond meant that Tracy’s murder became the tragic ending to OHMSS, in-keeping with Ian Fleming’s novel.
Isolated by Hunt during filming at Arrábida Natural Park near Setúbal, Portugal, George Lazenby read the closing chapter of Fleming’s novel and cried during the climactic scene in which Bond cradles his murdered bride in his arms. Hunt made him reshoot the scene as “Bond does not cry”, but Lazenby convinced Hunt to use the original version as Tracy’s death was such a momentous occasion in Double-0 Seven’s life that it justified his crying.
For the closing shot of OHMSS, the art department painted the bullet hole onto the windscreen of the Aston Martin DBS rather than piercing the glass.
