20 Things You Didn’t Know About Whiplash

1. The Reason Behind The Ambiguous Ending

Whiplash JK Simmons
Sony Pictures Classics

One of its most famous attributes, Whiplash’s ending was the source of debate for a great number of film fans over the years. While it is suggested that Andrew is on the path towards perfection and succession and he overcame Fletcher’s initial plan to sabotage his career and even won his approval, it all comes at the expense of his wellbeing.

Damien Chazelle mentioned that Andrew’s skill as a drummer was bound to grow, but it would come at the expense of his mental health and in the process, he lost some of his humanity. However, he did note that that the intense process could be productive in the right scenario, just not in music school.

Either way, the director does not see a happy ending for his story’s protagonist, and any other conclusion would simply undermine the film’s message.
