20 Things You Didn't Know About 2021's Oscar Nominees
10. Viola Davis Is In The Film For Just 27 Minutes - Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom ended up scoring five Oscar nominations, most notably a posthumous Best Actor nod for Chadwick Boseman and a Best Actress nomination for Viola Davis.
Yet despite playing the title character, Davis is actually in the film for only a fraction of its runtime, her screen time totalling just 26 minutes and 41 seconds, with the actual protagonist of the piece really being Boseman's trumpeter Levee Green.
The smaller stature of Davis' role saw many commentators calling out her Best Actress nomination as category fraud, for while she's the most prominent female role in the movie, she's very clearly supporting Boseman's inarguable lead performance.
