American Psycho was largely shot in Toronto, Canada, and despite the production being both low budget and low-key, that didn't stop the shoot being opposed by protesters.

Activists from the group Canadians Concerned About Violence in Entertainment were miffed that not only was the film being shot in Toronto, but that the local authority provided financial support to the production.

As a result, C-CAVE sent faxes to local newspapers decrying American Psycho as a "hideous and disgusting movie," though according to Harron, the film's seven-week shoot ultimately went off without a hitch.
