Christian Bale very nearly missed out on playing Patrick Bateman numerous times, largely due to Lionsgate insisting that Bale simply wasn't famous enough.

Back when the rights for Ellis' novel were first acquired, Johnny Depp expressed an interest in playing Bateman, and Keanu Reeves was reportedly offered the part at one point in time. Yet once Harron came aboard in 1997, she was dead-set on casting Bale.

Nevertheless, the studio wanted to mount the movie with Leonardo DiCaprio as its lead at a much higher budget, and Harron consequently refused to even meet with the actor, fundamentally feeling that he was wrong for the part.

At one point, an offer was even made to Ewan McGregor, who ultimately refused after Bale requested him to. Harron eventually got her way, however, by agreeing to cast name actors Dafoe and Witherspoon in supporting roles. And the rest, as they say, is history.

While it's easy to imagine McGregor doing something interesting with the part, it's hard to argue with the decision Harron made here.
