20 Things You Didn't Know About Batman Begins

10. Christopher Nolan Has A Thing For Classic Bond Movies

As if Inception€™s final ski chase, modeled pretty damn closely after On Her Majesty€™s Secret Service, didn€™t give you a hint, Chris Nolan likes the Bond movies €“ a lot. When Nolan and Goyer were looking to cinematic inspiration for their Batman tale, alongside influences like The Man Who Would Be King and Lawrence of Arabia, they also looked back to some of the classic Bond movies. Nolan wanted to keep their Batman€™s technology relatively low tech, like in many of the early, less gadget laden Bond films of Sean Connery; Nolan also told critic Elvis Mitchell that part of the reason that Ra€™s al Ghul appealed to him was because he was less like the grotesque, Dick Tracy inspired villains of classic Batman lore and more of a Bond villain, like Hugo Drax or Karl Stromberg. Perhaps Nolan cast actor Shane Rimmer as €œOlder Wayne Enterprises Water Technician€ (he€™s the white haired guy who keeps yelling €œIt€™s gonna blow!€) as a tribute; Rimmer appeared in four Bond films, and had his biggest part as a Navy commander in The Spy Who Loved Me, Nolan€™s favorite of the Roger Moore Bonds. And, of course, Nolan and Goyer reinvented Lucius Fox from just CEO of Wayne Enterprises to €œBatman€™s Q€, the guy Batman gets all his €œwonderful toys€ from. (This last change seems to have worked out for the best, because in his most recent comic book appearances, Fox seems to have become Wayne Enterprises' go-to tech expert.)

C.B. Jacobson pops up at What Culture every once in a while, and almost without fail manages to embarrass the site with his clumsy writing. When he's not here, he's making movies, or writing about them at http://buddypuddle.blogspot.com.
