20 Things You Didn't Know About Batman Begins

8. Christopher Nolan Apparently Did Not Have A Thing For Superheroes - Except For One

Superman If you€™re noticing a dearth of influences on Nolan€™s part from other superhero films, there€™s a reason for that: Nolan didn€™t much care for the Burton/Schumacher series of Batman films €“ although he€™s complimented the 1989 Tim Burton film for being €œextraordinary€ and €œvisionary€, he€™s also confessed that it €œwasn€™t Batman€ €“ and if interviews are to be believed he hasn€™t paid much attention to the huge boom of superhero movies of recent years. The one superhero movie that did intrigue Nolan was Richard Donner€™s 1978 Superman: The Movie; Nolan has stated that that film€™s use of epic casting (Gene Hackman, Glenn Ford, Marlon Brando, Trevor Howard, Terrence Stamp), its scale and scope, and its treatment of a definitive origin story for its central character were hugely inspirational when writing Batman Begins. €œI felt like there was a version of Batman that never got made in 1979,€ said Nolan in the print version of the Batman Begins screenplay; €œit seems odd that they didn€™t do Batman in that same way €“ with the same epic sensibility.€

C.B. Jacobson pops up at What Culture every once in a while, and almost without fail manages to embarrass the site with his clumsy writing. When he's not here, he's making movies, or writing about them at http://buddypuddle.blogspot.com.
