Tim Burton has always been inventive with casting, unless he is having a particularly lazy Sunday and thinks, "Screw it, I'll just get Johnny [Depp]". He made a habit, particularly in his early career of casting his icons - such as Vincent Price in Edward Scissorhands. So it's no surprise that, before backing away from the project, he had some out-there ideas for who should play Edward Nygma AKA The Riddler.

It's easy to forget that vocalist and drummer for Beatles knock-off band The Monkees Micky Dolenz got his start as a child actor on a show called Circus Boy. It's even hard to recall that The Monkees, at the height of their popularity, had their own weekly sitcom.

Burton certainly remembered, and wanted to bring him back to the screen once again.
