20 Things You Didn't Know About Blade Runner 2049

5. Sapper Morton And The Virgin Lands

When Officer K tracks down a Nexus 8 in hiding, Sapper Morton, we see the production of the only food source available after the eco-system crash.

As Officer K approaches the complex, the word Целина can be seen on the industrial green houses in which Morton works.

The Russian word translates as 'tselina' or 'virgin lands' and has its origins in a project spearheaded by Soviet leader Khrushchev in the late 1950s and early sixties.

The idea was to resettle civilians to sparsely populated areas of the country to farm the highly fertile soil in the Volga region, something which clearly inspired the industrialist Niander Wallace even though the landscape of 2049 is clearly barren. Art imitates life, with a sci-fi twist.
