20 Things You Didn't Know About Blade Runner 2049

6. Wallace's Nightingale Floor

Niander Wallace's super swanky all-wood HQ was designed by Dennis Gassner, who based the palatial lair on the world famous Kiyomizu-dera temple in Kyoto, Japan.

The design was not merely aesthetic either, as some late medieval functionality was also incorporated, even though it doesn't feature in the plot of the film.

The design was based on the Uguisubari floor, or Nightingale floor, which due to nails rubbing against holding clamps makes a 'chirping' sound, alerting the occupants to the presence of intruders, which makes sense given that Wallace is blind - an analogue security solution in a decaying digital dystopia.
