20 Things You Didn't Know About Charlize Theron

1. Even The Razzies Avoid Criticizing Her

Charlize Theron
Warner Bros. Pictures

Those early roles she took, sacrificing shortcuts to fame to indulge in the pleasure of working with legends and friends, almost came back to haunt her. She was nominated for Razzie for Sweet November in 2002, but lost to Mariah Carey in Glitter.

Since then, however, she's been notably absent from the cynical organization's ranks. She came close to being nominated for Aeon Flux, which would have made her the first actress to be nominated for an Oscar (for North Country) and a Razzie at the same time, but she narrowly avoided it. Since then, she's become something of Hollywood royalty, rarely appearing vain or conceited and always adding something unexpected to roles that could otherwise be "Hot Chick Who Dies At the End" or "Hot Chick Who Is Empowered".

That's a long way to travel from Apartheid-ridden South African, a horrible father and a handful of broken dreams.
