Before Dan Hedaya was cast to play Cher's father Mel Horowitz, a few other actors were in contention for the part.

Law & Order's Jerry Orbach was offered the role but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts with the series, after which Harvey Keitel was considered.

Ultimately, however, Keitel didn't get the part due to his high asking price, given the film's relatively slender $12 million price tag. And so, the production finally settled on their third pick, Hedaya, who made the role very much his own regardless.

It's easy to see how any of the three actors could've knocked it out of the park, but Hedaya certainly wasn't a lesser pick by any means.
