In the 1990s, so-called "sweetener" deals were becoming increasingly common, in which studios effectively invested in up-and-coming talents by offering them lucrative development deals on future projects.

Alicia Silverstone was the recipient of one such deal after Clueless was a box office hit, with Columbia/TriStar giving her and her First Kiss production company a development deal worth $10 million.

Ultimately this deal quickly stagnated, with Silverstone only ever producing a single movie under the label, 1997's Excess Baggage, which tanked at the box office, was panned by critics, and netted her a Razzie nomination for Worst Actress.

Soon thereafter Columbia quietly distanced itself from Silverstone, and that was that.
