20 Things You Didn't Know About Die Another Day

5. Fly Another Day

The hovercraft chase between Double-0 Seven and Colonel Moon through the heavily-mined Demilitarised Zone that separates North and South Korea was primarily filmed at Eelmoor Tank Driving Range in Aldershot, Hampshire.

The range is on the flight path for Farnborough Airport and, naturally, the passengers and crew on incoming and outbound flights were concerned to see explosions and fires on the ground below them, so the filmmakers and the airport agreed a rota for filming around flights. Because of this, plans to build Moon’s compound at Eelmoor were later abandoned and it was shot on the backlot at Pinewood Studios instead.

Originally, the filmmakers considered using Skimmers - which fly 50 feet above the water - for the sequence. However, when they learned that Skimmers lack manoeuvrability, taking around four miles to perform a simple turn, Mike Woodley suggested to second unit director and stunt coordinator, Vic Armstrong that they use hovercraft instead.

The extended hovercraft chase was filmed at Hawley Woods in Hampshire and at Hankley Common near Elstead in Surrey, which had accommodated several of the oil pipeline and buzz-saw helicopter sequences in The World Is Not Enough and later housed James Bond’s ancestral home in SkyFall (2012).

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
