Whilst Sheena Easton featured in the opening titles of For Your Eyes Only (1981) to perform her theme of the same name, Madonna is the only performer of a Bond song to play a character in one of the films.

Originally, Madonna’s character, Verity - a fencing instructor at Blades Club - was homosexual as a nod to Pussy Galore from Ian Fleming’s 1959 novel, Goldfinger. Lee Tamahori even shot lingering footage of Verity getting close to Olympic gold medalist, Miranda Frost and touching her to emphasise this, but ultimately decided against it in favour of letting the audience use their imagination.

It is also implied that Gustav Graves and Miranda might be lovers, although Graves explains that they are linked by their mutual weakness for “winning, whatever the cost”. Raymond Benson’s novelisation of the film explains that Graves’s alter ego, Colonel Moon befriended Miranda Frost because he could see how her fencing attributes and hopes of joining MI6 could be used to his advantage, rather than showing any romantic interest in her.

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
