20 Things You Didn't Know About Die Hard

6. The Scene Where John & Hans First Meet Was Never Rehearsed To Keep It Fresh

One of the best scenes in the movie sees Hans accidentally being caught by John while skulking around the Plaza, at which point he's forced to contrive an American alter-ego, Bill Clay, and pretend that he's one of the hostages.

Despite how brilliantly acted and executed the scene is, Rickman and Willis never rehearsed it prior to shooting, with McTiernan feeling that the resulting nervous energy would make the scene feel more spontaneous.

To make it even more interesting, this scene was also the first one Rickman shot for the movie.

A possible by-product of these facts, however, is that Rickman injured his knee while filming an early part of the scene, and so had to shoot the rest of it standing on one leg while wearing a leg brace underneath his clothes.
