The role of John's estranged wife Holly was majorly sought after in Hollywood, likely due to the fact that she was a rare 80s action movie love interest who was self-assured, independent, and not a total damsel-in-distress.

Numerous high-profile actors were considered for the role, including Meryl Streep, Diane Keaton, Glenn Close, Sally Field, Carrie Fisher, Linda Hamilton, Geena Davis, Debra Winger, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kelly McGillis, and Goldie Hawn.

Kirstie Alley was also in talks at one point, but Cheers producer James Burrows refused to grant her time away from the show to film the movie.

Ultimately it was Bruce Willis who had a hand in getting Bonnie Bedelia cast, being a fan of her work and feeling that, despite the part getting so much A-list attention, she was best-suited to play Holly.

You can't argue with his decision, really. As capable as all these actresses would've been, can you really see many of them playing Holly?
