Hot off the success of Predator the year before, director John McTiernan was offered Die Hard, though actually ended up turning the script down numerous times before accepting.

The filmmaker reportedly found the film's tone to be too "nasty," though once Fox agreed to allow him to lighten the film's mood and make it a broader, less mean-spirited piece of work, he came aboard.

Given that Die Hard's darkly comedic tone is one of its most identifiable and entertaining elements, it's safe to say that McTiernan was right to voice his concerns.
