20 Things You Didn't Know About Django Unchained

6. The Candyland Trackers Play Poker With Severed Ears

After Django blows up Aussie Quentin and the other LeQuint Dickey Mining Company employees who were escorting him, he heads back to Candyland to save Broomhilda and take further vengeance. Before rescuing his little troublemaker and kneecapping Stephen, Django kicks down the door of the trackers' den and shoots them down. The death toll includes the leader of this pack, Stonecipher. There are a group of men sitting around the table playing a game of poker. Eagle-eyed viewers may notice something different about the game's currency.

Instead of using chips or coins or anything normal, the men are using the severed ears of slaves as currency. In history, the cropping of ears was a form of punishment that slave owners would dole out to runaway slaves who had been recaptured. Other forms of punishment to runaway slaves included branding with a hot poker. An R would symbolise that this particular slave ran away. Broomhilda and Django were branded by the Brittle brothers.
