20 Things You Didn't Know About Dr. No

1. Before Sean Connery...

Terence Young and Sean Connery contributed greatly to the style and characterisation of James Bond.

Nevertheless, Connery is not actually the first onscreen James Bond; that was Barry Nelson in 1954’s Casino Royale. Sir Sean also cannot lay claim to being the first onscreen Double-0 Seven in the Eon Productions Bond franchise.

As has become customary in the Bond films that have followed, there is a gun barrel sequence in the film in which the gentleman British agent walks onscreen and shoots an unseen assailant. Stuntman, Bob Simmons performed the role of James Bond in this highly stylised motif created by film title designer, Maurice Binder.

Simmons repeated this function in both From Russia With Love and Goldfinger before Connery took up the famous walk-on himself in Thunderball.

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
