As much as you might think that a role where an actor doesn't speak many lines might not require much preparation, Ryan Gosling undertook a very specific task to get into the head-space of a stunt driver who also happens to be a mechanic.

Refn allowed Gosling to pick the Driver's primary choice of vehicle himself, the actor ultimately selecting a beaten-up 1973 Chevy Malibu from a Los Angeles junkyard.

The car was then taken to a production warehouse where Gosling stripped and restored it almost entirely himself, leaving only the transmission for more seasoned professionals to take care of.

If the intention was to make Gosling seem like a pro in the garage, then it most certainly worked.
