Despite the strangeness and the brutality of his movies, Refn loves to create his films in a tight-knit, family-like atmosphere, such that he had both Carey Mulligan and writer Hossein Amini move into his Los Angeles apartment with him, his wife, and two daughters during shooting.

Throughout production, they would watch films, edit the movie, and drive around in the evenings, all while Amini lived in the attic and continued to make revisions to the script with Refn.

The apartment was reportedly also a hangout spot for the cast and crew, and the actors had frequent script readings there while revising aspects of the story.
