20 Things You Didn't Know About Heat
11. The Film Is Used As A Teaching Aid For Real-Life Soldiers
Heat's focal shootout is often lauded for its tactical realism, to the extent that it's often used as a training tool for real soldiers around the world.
In 2002, the U.S. Marine Corps in San Diego showed the shootout to recruits in order to demonstrate a correct method of retreating from gunfire, and Val Kilmer was reportedly ecstatic to learn that his mid-gunfight magazine change was also singled out as the correct way to do so.
In 2007, the shootout was also shown to British Army cadets at RMA Sandhurst for both the retreat and gunfire manoeuvres on display.
For any action filmmaker, this must surely be the ultimate compliment, when people who are literally paid to fire guns for a living are using your work as reference material.
