In addition to serving as a teaching tool for law enforcement, the central heist has also reportedly influenced the methods of ambitious criminals.

In particular, the 1997 North Hollywood shootout, which saw Larry Phillips, Jr. and Emil Mătăsăreanu rob the North Hollywood Bank of America branch and die in the ensuing shootout, has been likened to Heat's shootout, with Phillips even later being found to own a copy of the movie.

Heat has also been invoked by news media in countries as diverse as South Africa, Colombia, Denmark, and Norway to describe daring heists of armoured cars.
