In addition to changing Cusack's mind about the movie's fourth wall breaks, Stephen Frears also had a hand in ensuring that Jack Black stayed aboard the film, despite the actor's instincts telling him otherwise.

Black reportedly tried to quit the movie twice, but Frears fought to keep him. In his own words, "Jack's a bolter, and I brought him back twice because I had faith in him. Sometimes you're amazed by the stuff you get."

Quite why Black didn't have full confidence in either the project or himself is unknown, but thanks to Frears being able to corral him, we weren't deprived of a killer supporting performance.
