You'd think that Nolan's Batman movies would be the flicks that best translated to overseas territories, but that actually isn't the case.

When it opened in the lucrative Chinese market on a Wednesday, Interstellar nabbed Nolan's biggest-ever opening day in the Middle Kingdom, grossing $5.4 million on 7,742 screens - in local currency, that's 33.3 million yuan.

For comparison, Inception only pulled in 12 million yuan, while The Dark Knight Rises managed 28.3 million yuan.

On the whole, Nolan is a very popular name with Chinese audiences, and Interstellar is one of those movies that really resonates with that crowd. In fact, while the pandemic was raging in 2020, an Interstellar re-release set COVID-era records in China - not bad for a seven-year-old movie.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
