James Woods, who worked on Salvador with Stone in 1986, lobbied hard for the role of Jim Garrison. The problem was, he didn't want a film mired in conspiracy and insanity, but rather one that focused on the life of Garrison.

So the two argued back and forth, with Woods eventually giving up his campaign. As a concession, Stone offered Woods the role of David Ferrie, but he refused. He would, however, go on to play H.R. Haldeman in Stone's biopic Nixon.

It is interesting that he didn't seem interested in the conspiracy angle, given that Woods primarily exists on twitter to promote Trump propaganda and Hilary Clinton conspiracy theories now.
