20 Things You Didn't Know About Near Dark
5. Near Dark Nearly Had An Alternative Ending
Near Dark ends on a positive note; (SPOILERS AHEAD...) Caleb manages to escape the clutches of the vampire gang with his father and sister intact. His father, a farmer and a dab hand with a transfusion kit, attempts a radical procedure; switch out Caleb's light sensitive vampire blood for regular human stuff. Amazingly, it works and both Caleb and Mae have another chance of life.
Bigelow wanted to include a scene where Caleb's kid sister begins to burn when exposed to sunlight, implying that Homer managed to have a quick nibble on her while in the motel room. Good thing she had a rethink, as the successful transfusion of Caleb and Mae rendered this twist meaningless - a cure had just been discovered.
