Kathryn Bigelow is probably the most recognisable female director in the world. If her ex-husband, James Cameron, had bagged the Best Picture Oscar for Avatar in 2010 instead of Bigelow for The Hurt Locker), life may have been very different for her.

In 1986, she had to negotiate just to get her first crack in the director's chair, agreeing to work with writer Eric Red. She would collaborate with Red on Undertow as a writer, provided he would return the favour on Near Dark, thus securing the finances for both projects.

After Near Dark came another cult classic, Point Break, followed a few years later by Strange Days. Bigelow had proven herself many times over and as is often the case in Hollywood, had to work twice as hard as her male counterparts to get there.
