Not every movie is what it seemsL: Star Wars was really a classic fantasy wrapped in a sci-fi setting, and even The Fellowship Of The Ring has much in common with the road movie. Near Dark is no exception, combining Western and Horror in a way that would not be repeated until Tarantino/Rodriguez's 1996 From Dusk Till Dawn.
Think about it - a young farm hand falls in love with a girl who is trapped with a group of murderous drifters intent on killing all they meet. All it would take is 100 years knocked off the clock and a few more horses, and the genre question would be in no doubt.
The fact that they are all immortal is coincidental to the setting - everyone has to die in some way or another, whether it's bullets or sunlight.
