Since Netflix is a massive global operation, it's important for the company to ensure that its content is as accessible to as many people as possible - and that includes making its movies and TV shows available in a broad range of languages.

The company already has tons to select - including Korean, Polish and Arabic - but the list will continue to grow as long as there's a demand for it, and Netflix has even devised a way to recruit skilled translators to beef up its localization efforts.

To that end, the Netflix HERMES Test was established a few years ago, and was touted as "the first online subtitling and translation test and indexing system by a major content creator." Basically, it's a way for Netflix to plug the holes in its range of subtitle options, with the company choosing to invent its own test because they felt that a good translator recruitment system didn't already exist.
