20 Things You Didn't Know About No Country For Old Men

17. Mark Strong Almost Played Anton Chigurh

It’s almost impossible to picture anyone other than Javier Bardem playing the role of Anton Chigurh, but the part almost went to Mark Strong.

He is known for portraying chilling, villainous characters, so it’s easy to see why he was considered for the role of Chigurh. The Coens were set on Bardem for the role, although the Spanish actor’s schedule almost prevented him from taking the part, therefore Strong was installed as their back-up plan.

Rumours have since circulated that Strong actually turned down the role, something that the English actor vehemently denies.

He told Total Film:

“Why the hell would you turn that part down? I would kneel on broken glass to work with them (The Coens)”

After hearing that Bardem’s dates would not allow him to participate in the film, Strong thought he might get the chance to work with the brothers. But ultimately Bardem was able to free up his schedule and the rest is history. Sorry Mark.
