20 Things You Didn't Know About Psycho

16. Hitchcock Credits Bernard Herrmann's Score With "Saving" The Movie

Bernard Herrmann's score for the movie is one of the most iconic and unforgettable in cinema history, and one which Hitchcock freely credits with helping bring the film to life.

After completing his first cut of Psycho, Hitch was convinced that the film was a failure, even considering cutting it down to the length of a TV episode.

But before doing so, he had Herrmann score the film, and upon viewing the end result, was extremely satisfied.

Notably, Hitchcock originally envisioned the shower scene featuring no musical score whatsoever, but once he heard Herrmann's work on the scene, that obviously changed.

Better still, Hitchcock was so grateful to Herrmann for rescuing the movie that he doubled his salary to $34,501 and later said, "Thirty-three percent of the effect of Psycho was due to the music." Damn straight.
