It's no secret that the majority of Shutter Island's principal photography took place in Massachusetts, true to the film's primary setting, and even for the grim World War II flashback scenes, the production remained in-state.

Presumably in order to save costs, rather than actually transplant to Germany to film the Dachau concentration camp scene or just further afield in the U.S., these flashbacks were all shot in Taunton, Massachusetts, with a textile mile retrofitted to resemble the historic camp.

And per the movie magic audiences typically expect from Scorsese and his superb production designers, you'd hardly know these scenes were shot within American borders.
