14. There Are Intentional Continuity Errors To Keep Viewers Uncomfortable

In order to reflect Teddy's broken mental state and keep the audience unconsciously uncomfortable throughout the film, Scorsese included a number of intentional continuity errors ultimately intended to foreshadow Shutter Island's big twist.

In one memorable scene, a patient can be seen "drinking" a glass of invisible water, only for the next shot to show an actual glass of water.

At first glance it might seem like a simple editing mistake, but when you consider that the film was edited by Scorsese's longtime colleague Thelma Schoonmaker, arguably the world's greatest living editor no less, it's clear that it was no accident.
