Though Shutter Island of course borrows its name from the title of Lehane's 2003 source novel, shortly before production started the film's title was actually changed from Shutter Island to "Ashecliffe," after the story's focal hospital for the criminally insane.

Logic eventually prevailed, however, and before the film's marketing push kicked off in late 2009, the original, source-accurate title was restored, much to fans' relief.

Had Paramount stuck with that original, less-snappy title, it's safe to say that the film's box office likely would've been impacted - if only by those who didn't realise it was actually a Shutter Island adaptation at all.
