Despite there being considerable industry skepticism about A New Hope, it's still little surprise that the role of Princess Leia was intensely sought out by literally dozens of well-known and on-the-rise actresses alike.

Just a handful of the actresses who were either considered for or pursued the role are: Karen Allen, Christine Baranski, Kim Basinger, Glenn Close, Geena Davis, Farrah Fawcett, Anjelica Huston, Margot Kidder, Jessica Lange, Sissy Spacek, Kathleen Turner, Sigourney Weaver, Jodie Foster, and even Meryl Streep.

While there's little denying the incredible talents who could've played Leia, there's of course no replacing Carrie Fisher's indelible, for-the-ages performance.
