The film was intended to be released on digital platforms on Tuesday March 17, 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic forcing large swaths of the world to stay inside, Disney decided to bring the release forward by four days, dropping it on Friday March 13 instead, just two days after the WHO declared COVID-19 a global pandemic.

Even though The Rise of Skywalker fell short of expectations for a lot of fans, it was still a neat and unexpected gesture by Disney, to drop the film early on digital and help keep those sheltering at home entertained during a period of major anxiety and uncertainty.
