20 Things You Didn't Know About The Exorcist

12. Max Von Sydow Spent Four Hours In Make-Up Every Day

Whilst this might not seem like much of a big deal by modern standards, the craziest thing is that it was all to make Max Von Sydow look older.

Aged only 44 at the time, Sydow had to go through a pretty brutal process to look the part of Father Merrin. A make-up artist would manually stretch the skin on his face to apply liquid latex to it. Once the latex was dry, the skin would be released, and the resulting rubber correlation gave Sydow his aged appearance in the film.

Sydow found the process excruciating and with this being Hollywood in 1973, we can only imagine it was pretty crap to sit through every day on set. Actress Linda Blair had it easy by comparison having to only endure two hours every morning, although she did get so bored a TV had to be installed so she didn't dose off in the chair every morning.

Sam Ring hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
