The Good, The Bad And The Ugly is the third entry in Leone's Dollars Trilogy, their chronology is actually considered to be in reverse. The first 2 entries, A Fistful Of Dollars and For A Few Dollars More, are fairly interchangeable, with newspapers and gravestones dating it in 1873. However, Eastwood's character in the first film shows a compassion lacking from the second, implying him having undergone some personal growth if the 2 films are switched around.

The Good, The Bad And The Ugly, however, clearly takes place long before this, being explicitly set during the American Civil War and therefore the 1860s.
