Beyond the rather uncouth marketing campaign studios launched surrounding the film's supposed curse, they opted for a more old-fashioned approach as well. As part of its pre-release, the studio held sneak previews around the country on June 6, 1976, in keeping with Damien's 666 birthmark.

While audiences were in the theatre, employees would litter the lobby with posters reading "Today is the SIXTH day on the SIXTH month of Nineteen-Seventh-SIX!"

Hokey though it was, the gimmick proved effective, with patrons reportedly "freaking out" at the posters.
