Horror movie marketing has come up with some ingenious schemes over the years but it was the use of fake websites to promote the 'documentary' The Blair Witch Project that revolutionised the approach.

For The Ring, a mere three years later, several websites alluding to the events of the film were hosted, including a standard promo site and more bizarrely, a site (anopenletter.com) featuring a warning message on the effects of the video, which you can still read here.

The real kicker is that this site was publicised via actual VHS cassettes that were left on car windshields outside cinemas, gigs and other public gatherings, presumably to get bums on seats or to just freak the sh*t out of us. Either way, it worked.
