Despite the return of Hideo Nakata to the franchise, The Ring 2 wasn't great, adding little to the mythology. It did, however, spawn a short prequel, included in The Ring's Special Edition DVD.

Jake, the high school protagonist, is a member of 'Rings,' a group obsessed with Samara's video, who are playing the ultimate game of chicken - who can make it the longest before getting freaked out and making a copy. As the days progress, the curse begins to manifest itself in increasingly bizarre, scarier ways, ladders appear from nowhere and water runs up walls.

With Marvel regular Emily VanCamp (Jake's unwitting recipient of the virus) making an appearance, it's a shame this never made it to a feature - it's considerably more interesting than anything the sequel had to offer.
