20 Things You Didn't Know About The Ring
12. David Lynch And The Ring
In 1998, producers Walter F Parkes and Laurie MacDonald received a call from an excited studio exec telling them to watch a curious horror movie making waves in Japan. That film was Ringu and Dreamworks immediately took out an option for the remake rights.
In 2001, Naomi Watts was hot property, receiving considerable praise for her work in Mulholland Drive. The success of that film was largely due to its director, David Lynch and he was immediately approached to direct The Ring, ultimately declining.
Can you imagine what Lynch would have made of this film? The Ring mythos is surreal enough but chuck some Lynchian madness in there and the results could have been art house, sci fi horror of a kind we haven't seen.
